"Golden tannery, Castle Rock, Golden City" - 1.07.024
Golden City Tannery
Circa 1867
This is Jefferson County's first industrial tannery, on the south side of
Clear Creek next to South Table Mountain and Castle Rock. Photograph
is taken from the north side of Clear Creek around present-day Highway 58.
The Golden City Tannery was built by Charles Clark Welch and A. Henry Clements
of Central City in 1867, including a stone first story and brick second story
in industrial mill style of design with steep gabled roof and crow's nest
on top. This building was abandoned and purchased by Jacob Schueler
and Adolph H.J. Coors in 1873 and converted into the original Coors Brewery,
now no longer in existance.
