East side of Washington Avenue
1873
This image is taken of what is today the east side of the 1200 block of Washington
Avenue. Buildings from left to right include the Avenue Hotel (1211
Washington Ave., built 1870, Garbareno House in 1873); Linder Block (Northern
half still standing at 1215 Washington Ave., built 1873, Slocum & Jones
Grocery in 1873); and the Loveland Block (second of two buildings by that
name, existed 1867-1962 at 1219-21 Washington Ave.). Hotel was built
by noted Italian immigrant Charles Garbareno, and was through time named the
City Restaurant, Garbareno House/Hotel, Hotel Babcock, Crawford House, Poe
Hotel, Avenue Hotel, and Cody Hotel, now remodeled with 1931 storefront.
Loveland Block was built by Duncan E. Harrison and William A.H. Loveland,
was remodeled with this front in 1873 (originally a front gabled roof), and
housed stores, Methodist and Episcopal churches and the Colorado Transcript
and Jefferson County Republican newspapers. This was annexed and incorporated
into Linder Block in 1902, and demolished along with half of original Linder
Block in 1962.
